Position Overview 

The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting the Director of Finance and Investments with all phases of the Accounting Department. This role involves the ability to understand the monthly closing process, budgeting, managing external relationships and working well with others.  We will be setting procedures for Internal Controls and leading the organization with process improvements.  A good working knowledge of all facets of financial statements and preparation of Boad Packages is expected.  This role will work closely with all other Departments in the organization so the ability to get along with other disciplines (Operations, Claimant Intake, etc.) will be critical. A good positive outlook and the ability to overcome tough challenges is essential. The position is Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This role reports to the Director of Finance and Investments. 


Essential Duties: 

All functions of the Accounting Department that include: 

  • Month End Closing process including Account Reconciliations and review of other accountants' reconciliations 

  • Assist the Director of Finance and Investments with Preparation of Monthly Financial Statements 

  • Assist the Director of Finance and Investments with the Annual Budgeting Process 

  • Assist Director of Finance and Investments with outside relationships such as Insurance Agencies, Auditors, Actuaries, etc. 

  • Work with the Director of Finance and Investments to help improve and create processes in the Accounting Department and operational processes collaborating other, as needed 

  • Follows all documented accounting policies and procedures  

  • Assists with, prepares schedules, and provides necessary supporting documentation in support of internal audits and external financial/compliance audits (CPA firm, taxing authorities, etc.)  

  • Assists with the preparation of all local, state, and federal tax reporting and form filings 

  • Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) 

  • Assists with creating and maintaining effective forecasting and budgeting models and related tools that support the Program’s decision making 

  • Provides commentary and key insights into variance analysis (actuals vs budget and prior year) for the Program 

  • Assists with the development of other decision support reporting tools  

  • Assistance with the producing of monthly, year-to-date actuals, and key metrics reporting on a monthly basis 

  • Information Technology 

  • Participates in the planning for and implementation of new and/or updated information, accounting, and administrative systems  

  • Helps to eliminate redundancies and inefficiencies throughout the Program’s administrative and information systems 

  • Follows data and systems protection practices that protect against loss and/or unauthorized access to sensitive, private, etc. financial and employee information  

  • Partners with and act as a sounding board, constructive questioner, brainstorming partner, and advisor to the Director of Finance  

  • Participates in decisions dealing with tactical decisions and operational pursuits 

  • Effectively collaborates with other departments and interdisciplinary teams 

  • Implements policies, procedures, and processes as agreed to by the Program 

  • Participates in the Program’s tactical and operational planning  

  • Assists with developing and maintaining forward-looking financial plans and models  

  • Provides analyses that align with and provide insights into the effectiveness of plans and budgets

Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business or equivalent experience   

  • Experience: Three to 5 years of experience, Public accounting experience preferred   

  • Skills: Have good interpersonal skills and be adaptive to a changing environment 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • QuickBooks Desktop experience, Micrsoft suites, or equivalent software. 

  • The ability to look for areas of process improvement and show the skills to undertake those without having to be asked 

  • Strong Interpersonal skills to communicate with executives and staff employees 


Physical requirements include but are not limited to: 

  • Able to talk, hear and understand others, both in person and by phone 

  • Able to use hands and fingers in a manner that allows for use of a keyboard and phone 

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision 

  • Able to work on a computer for extended periods of time
